I would have to say that of course you are able to make a good writer out of a competent one. Now you might not be able to make a great writer but you can make an OK one. Writers can only be made into an average degree and nothing more. One can only teach another writer the basics of writing and what to look out for in their writing and what they can improve.
It is up to the writer him/herself to create their own unique way of writing. And that can not be taught. A writer can only make themselves great. All a writer really needs is the basics to writing and that's it, just a starting point. Without a starting point the writer can only get worse. They need a place to start period.
Skills that come naturally to me is to make correct statements and correct grammar. I need help on the rest of writing such as creating starting point for an essay after that, it's smooth sailing.
But the point is GREAT WRITERS ARE NOT MADE, they're born.
